If there’s one movie that’s generating the most pre-release buzz, it has to be The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, due in large part to the about-to-be-HUGELY-FAMOUS actress Rooney Mara, who appears on the cover of the upcoming November issue of Vogue. The surest way to guarantee your status as an “It Girl” is to nab the cover of the most coveted fashion magazine in, oh, the WORLD, so we’d say Miss Mara has officially ARRIVED. Described as a “fierce talent” and sporting that weirdly awesome haircut that is trademark to the much-beloved Lisbeth Salander character that she’s playing, we think it’s rather unprecedented for a relatively unknown actress to arrive so quickly. Still, she looks STUNNING wearing the Ralph Lauren Collection Embroidered Daryn Gown on the cov-ah.

Retailing for, oh, $4498.00, the dress features a Chinese dragon on the back and evokes a sense of “exotic elegance,” which is perhaps what Vogue was going for. In the accompanying photo shoot, Mara wears everything from Alexander Wang to Marchesa looking alluring and edgy at the same time. Makeup artist Pat MGrath said of Mara, “I saw those bony features, those cheekbones, those eyes, I said, ’I can’t wait.’ I was instantly inspired. It’s like in fashion, when you get a girl who has one of those haunting faces that you can do absolutely anything with.” McGrath was instrumental in creating the Lisbeth look for the film and says the end result (which included shaving Mara’s eyebrows, dying her hair black, and piercing her, um, everywhere) looks both now and new. Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, we think the whole shoot marks a change for Vogue in that it’s refreshing to see an edgier girl, one younger people can relate to. The accompanying article, though? All we’ll say is CONTROVERSIAL, just like everything surrounding this new film and this new girl.
