Leave it to Marc Jacobs to close New York Fashion Week by bringing the fash-masses to their knees with a SPECTACULAR spring 2012 SHOW. Having moved his usually earlier time slot to the very end of the week due to production lost during Hurricane Irene, Jacobs spent that extra time preparing to blow us all away with an EVENT—we’re talking a raised curtain with models sitting in a tableau on a blue and orange-lit stage, and a wooden runway specifically constructed to elevate the catwalk experience to that of avant garde THEATAH.

As the lights faded to black, zig zag lightbulbs illuminated the catwalk “set” in front of the curtain, and the voices of women counting out loud with eerie precision revealed Jacobs’s tune of choice to be Philip Glass’s Einstein On a Beach. (Edgily CEREBRAL much? Yes, no? WHATEVER, WE LOVE IT.) Marc took the New York Fashion Week show to a whole new level. Even a front row illuminated with friends of Marc both old-skool and new like director Sofia Coppola and godmother to the entirety of indie rock, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, as well as recent New York transplant and the nubile face of Marc’s new “Oh, Lola!” fragrance line, Miss Dakota Fanning. Oh, and the CLOTHES, you ask? Fear not, Marc-y Marc fashion acolytes, the clothes were a cellophane-wrapped, modern rockabilly extravaganza. If there was ever a more appropriate moment to type ZOMG it would be right now.

Before the models strolled down the runway (with LAZER-FOCUSED intensity—we might add—making us wonder if these beauty dolls had attended some sort of MJ sanctioned actor training camp), they sat frozen in a silhouetted tableau onstage either draped over chairs or pointing to nothing in particular creating a full-on experimental theatre HAPPENING. The first looks were all about preppy shirts paired with the CRAZIEST, kewlest, crumpled cellophane-looking goodness. It was like vinyl candy wrapping was swirled around legs or wrapped tightly into spaghetti strapped dresses by a sartorial Willy Wonka. We particularly J’ADORED the green gingham western shirt paired with a shiny burgundy alligator skirt. (Um, WHAT?!) That particular ensemb also included calf-high socks, pointy heels, and a teal green bucket bag with a thick white strap. Y’allz, this look is so KOO-KOO BANANATOWN WEIRDO ZHAMAZING that our fingers are trembling just typing about it.

Oh, and there were headscarves GAH-lore! We already love this look, but it’s now OFFICIALLY our spring ’do of choice. Also—OK this is where we started to freak out a little, so please excuse anything that’s about to tumble forward—but, seriously, WHERE have these killer CLEAR and SILVER HEELED COWBOY BOOTS been all our lives?! Dagger meet HEART. Also, check out what they’re paired with. It’s like a modern-day Tippi Hedren from The Birds crossed with the retro rebelliousness of Michelle Pfeiffer in Grease 2 (which you should totally see if you haven’t already) all played out to a soundtrack by The Raveonettes. Also, we have no idea what that clear shingle skirt is made of, but we want. Marc pulled out all the stops, throwing in some brocade coats over shiny a-line dresses in gauzy mint green. There were sweatshirts paired with scrunched yet structured skirts topped with 1920s style hats, and oversized penny loafers for DAYS.

It was all all a little much—in the best possible way—and we are so thankful that a designer actually got bold and put on an honest to goodness show that both inspired and entertained. Isn’t this what “FASHION!” is supposed to be about in the first place? And aren’t “the SHOWS” meant to take us all somewhere we haven’t been before, to have a collection tell a story and leave us desperate to play the characters in our own lives? All we can say is, *gigantic hat tip* to you, Marc Jacobs. We’ll be COUNTING down the days until spring.
