Piling Hair Into High Unicorn Buns Is Way Cool For Spring 2012 (And For Right Now, Too)

If there's one hair trend we were most TRANSFIXED by during the Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week collections, we'd have to say it was the emergence of HIGH HAIR. Not only has the topknot become the UP-DO du jour for the stylee-ist of gals in the tents this season (hi, Susie Bubble!), but it's made waves (and braids) in new incarnations on the runway too. One of our faves was Alice + Olivia, who went for a more classic look, opting to slick back the hair (another SPRING TREND) before shaping it into the BIGGEST BUN we've ever seen, all teased, smoothed, and wrapped to '60s debutante perfection.

But where A+O went classy, Mara Hoffman went CRAZY (in the best possible way!) with piles of GIGANTASAURUS BRAIDS interwoven with strips of fabric from her spring collection to create a mountainous wonderland of Nicki Minaj-esque candy raver haute coiffure. Then there was Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. collection, which took the topknot to new heights—literally—with a towering blonde AND brunette hair horn that was very rockabilly unicorn. The greatest thing about high hair (regardless of the difficulty level, because really it's no biggie to just throw your ponytail into a messy bun) is that it works with a variety of fashion ensembles, both fancy and low-key. It also works with varying degrees of oops-haven't-washed-my-hair-in-days looks too.
