Anna Sui Has A 1940s Disco Dance Parade For Spring 2012, Which Makes Models Actually Smile

It was a 1940s themed party set in the 1970s at the Anna Sui show for New York Fashion Week. At the top of the runway, models stood in shades of fuchsia and purple light dancing with stars (LITERAL STARS!) while Karen Elson emerged as if from a delicious disco dream, hitting the runway adorned in a PATCHWORK PARADISE of 1940s chic, her strawberry curls bobbing in tandem with her clomping red platforms. Then, something UTTERLY UNPRECEDENTED happened. As Ms. Elson sailed past ardent Sui supporters in the front row like Sofia Coppola, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Kevin Jonas and his wife, Danielle Deleasa, she hit the edge of the runway, paused for a moment, and smiled. Folks, it was as if time itself stopped in static, captivated appreciation at the RARE SIGHTING of a SMILE on the runway in the fashion WILDZ! Yes, Ms. Sui—the reigning fairy godmother of vintage rock and roll fantasia—achieved the impossible for Spring 2012. Not only did she give us a troop of supes like Ms. Elson, Jessica Stam, and Karlie Kloss, she gifted us with a rollicking fun-time parade of Biba-inspired party ensembles we actually want to wear.

But seriously, Sui must have done something to the models because each and EVERY one of them took a moment to SMILE as they walked down the runway, tiny rays of glitter sunshine beaming from their ultra-shiny glossed lips straight into rows of monochromatic fashion hearts. How refreshing it is to see a bit of fun on the runway! (*Handkerchief wave* to Betsey Johnson.) The clothes were 1940s in style (bright floral print dresses topped in caplets or decorative belts, each tipped out in ankle socks and platform wedges) but many had 1970s spirit (like lacey rompers and white dresses topped with flouncy hats or a voluminous purple kaftan rocked out with PURPLE SADDLE SHOE WEDGES). If there’s anything Sui does well it’s mix feminine prints with edgy accessories, and the multitude of colorful (or glittery) platforms was astounding. Also new for spring? Butterfly hosiery and SUI LUGGAGE!

We particularly loved the crazy detailed black pieces in the collection (we know, we know, spring is all about BRIGHT and VIVID, but some of us still love a touch of GOTH, OK?), especially the gold glitter butterfly dress Elson wore at the show’s finale. Also, check out these mini hats and head scarves with perfect ringlets cascading down below them. This is a look to steal for FALL (and spring, too)! When so many other designers are trying to go for a much more modern silhouette, we LOVE that Anna Sui sticks to her multi-printed, vintage-inspired ensembles. Not only are they fun to look at and easy to accessorize and wear, there’s a spirited exuberance to them that makes us—much like the models—grin with Katharine Hepburn-like insouciance.
