DKNY Celebrates NYC With An Exuberant Spring Collection At New York Fashion Week

If there was any show that captured the spirit of today here in New York City, it had to be DKNY. Inspired by her daughter almost 22 years ago, Donna Karan’s younger line continues to be a brand of choice for working gals all over The Big Apple (and beyond!), and the Spring 2012 show paid homage to the city and the girl, where it all began. Staged against a TRUE NYC backdrop of a sidewalk and yellow cab featuring a DKNY sign on top and pedestrians strolling by in the distance, the models strutted by in vibrant colors and hats the way most city girls do—with confidence.

Perhaps it’s fitting that Karan chose candy APPLE red as one of the label’s spring colors because it was everywhere in the collection, usually juxtaposed with vibrant blue stripes or in a loud and proud poppy print that we thought was adorable as a pantsuit and on an oversized handbag. Like many collections we’ve witnessed this coming spring, there was a colorful sports-centric theme going on mostly in the form of fantastically cut, knee-length silk shorts and giant anoraks that would be perfect for boating around the Hudson or just your basic urban stroll on a windy day. DKNY will be showing its resort collection later in the week, and we wonder how it will tie to this one. If Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell is any indication (she wore a hot pink DKNY resort 2012 look on the front row), at least we know we’ll be seeing intense COLOR from late winter straight through to summer.

Also, this being New YAWK and this being DKNY, there had to be some chic black thrown into the mix. As every working girl knows, a black dress, skirt, pants, and shoes are your best friends when you’re running late in the morning, and Donna K’s the queen of making basic black anything but boring. There was a classic yet modern black jacket with gold buttons that looked sophisticated over summer whites. We’re also obsessing over the black, white, and green Jackson Pollock-esque patterned skinnies, sweatshirt, and shorts because any one of those could spruce up your basics (including this humongous new DKNY handbag shape that we’re positively thrilled about). Absolutely every model had a wide-brimmed floppy hat topping off her look, too. Perhaps a gentle nod to the rays of sunshine bouncing off the concrete on a hot day? Whatever the case, they worked with every look (even head-to-toe pink), and on a gray day like today, the nod to sunshine was welcome indeed.
