Where last year's United Bamboo Spring showed mostly what could be considered "weekend wear" with all their baring strapless and sleeveless cuts and a fair share of plunging necklines and rising hemlines, today's unveiling of the Spring 2012 collection at Chelsea Piers for New York Fashion Week displayed a more... mature, I guess would be the word, assemblage of pieces. Lots of layering and unlikely combinations: leather blazers with hot pants, halter tops with collars buttoned up to the tippy top, sideways pleating, etc. etc. made up a collection that spoke more (but only slightly) to a summer internship than the sweltering dog day afternoons of the Spring 2011 collection.

That's not to say this was some sort of sad staid line-up of garments because that is decidedly not the case. The turn to a more conservative (as far as epidermal unsheathing goes anyhow) sartorial aesthetic is a refreshing and welcome one, and one consummate prepsters like Alexa Chung have gravitated to for years. The neutrals and soft-tailoring of this modernized preppy look were flanked with leather and hot pants and abstract prints and voluminous slacks and maxi skirts and CORNROWS (!!!) - basically enough variety to make your head spin. But the deconstructed conservatism of these collared halters and structured dresses and OMGOMGOMG are you SEEING this amazing black-and-white sleeveless blazer?!!? Because now I'm so overcome with WANT that I can barely finish my thoughts. What's more is there was live music! A LIVEEEE girl duo with mixers and synths and solid beats and the most bananalicious feathered headdresses.
