It's not uncommon to see a musician or actor perched in the front row during fashion week, but to see a professional athlete (let alone TWO impeccably groomed ones, I might add) reaches levels of bananas and straight-up remarkable that my brain can hardly process. This morning's Richard Chai Spring 2012 fashion show in Lincoln Center played host to Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade (at his very first New York Fashion Week show!) and New York Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire looking polished and pressed to perfection (sidenote: hands down, these guys are arguably two of THE best-dressed dudes in the NBA—and that's not even biased because I'm a Lakers fan!). What's more, the frenzy of the dudes' mammoth presence totally supplemented Chai's incredible unveiling of his Spring 2012 collection!

The collection as a whole was quite a departure from Chai's past two seasons—the greyscale urban deconstructed layering of Fall 2011 and the nudes, subtle metallics, and sheer paneling of Spring 2011—with washes of bold tropical colors and generous employment of prints while sticking to Chai's signature modern tailoring. Even the beauty game took risks with swipes of neon across eyelids and pouts. Risks that, we think, were well-executed and WAY worth taking. All of it was, of course, exciting to a frenzy-making degree and had us weeping silently from our seats as we mourned the official passing of this summer. Three trends that resonated past the collection's swift reveal were heavy-handed layering (yes, even in the warmer months!), bare shoulders, and mixed prints, specifically the pairing of stripes with other more organic patterns (e.g., tribal or florals).

The bare-shoulder thing, we think, is the trend that will really have legs here, perhaps even into the fall. It's simple yet striking, and if there's ANY portion of epidermal real estate that is consistently seductive in a totally classy, non-disgusto-over-share kind of way, it's THA SHOULDER. And honestly, this silhouette looks good on ANYONE and pretty much any garment (see above: hot pants romper, asymmetrical hem dress, and jumpsuit). Test it, try it, quote me. You'll be glad you did.
