It’s very rare that you uncover such a gem of a video, so rife with shiny, sparkly fashion goodness as Oh Land’s “White Nights”. The video follows Nanna (dudes, check this out, Oh Land’s government name is SO awesome: Nanna Øland Fabricius) through a two-sided dream world with dancing bespandexed droids and singing glitter-faced merpeople through which she dances (literally: interpretive, ballet, tap, EVERYTHING!) from scene to scene. I mean, it’s bad enough she’s a dead ringer for a young Claudia Schiffer and sweet as pie, but that the girl gets to be shrouded in all that achingly cute garb? We almost can’t deal.

From the initial close-up of the amazeballs two-finger city space ring to the closing shots of her traipsing about in a white maxi shift with a matching full feather headdress, our hungry eyeballs were all, “OMNOMNOM, gimme more!” When met with such a gut-wrenching pang, the next logical step for us here at MTV Style is to get the video’s stylist on the horn STAT (see our Look By Look of Beyoncé’s “Run The World (Girls)” video for another example). Thankfully for us, Oh Land’s stylist and the genius behind all the dreamy indie looks, Jessica Bobince, gave us an EXCLUSIVE interview, obliging our bajillion questions about every colorway, fabric, and silhouette of the video.

MTV Style: WHOA. The fashion in this video is beautiful! Since the video relies heavily on moving between scenes and sets and dreams, how much did you and the director collaborate on the looks?

Jessica Bobince: First the director and I discussed the scenes. We discussed restrictions, for example which scenes would require the clothing to get wet. He was really open-minded about the styling. Then, Nanna and I got together and exchanged visual references of what she and I were into at the moment and ideas we had for different scenes. I would send her photos of potential look options until we found the perfect outfits for each scene. Then, we discussed all the outfits with the director, to make sure it meshed with his visions for the video, and we worked out the kinks until everything was peaches.

So tell us about the beautiful mohair crewneck look when she is first waking up. Oh, and we love the variation on the “summer braid.”

The pink mohair sweater top is Opening Ceremony. The shorts are elephant print, made by Kara Janx. Oh Land loves tribal elements: feathers, fringe, headpieces. The braid is another element of that.

ALL-WHITE CRINOLINE CROWN VEIL

When she first enters this, I guess, dream land, she wears a white, ruffled, lace, pearl, ribbon dress. Who made it, and what was the idea behind it and the significance of the crown/wedding veil elements?

That dress is from one of my favorite Marc Jacobs collections; the entire collection was ballet-inspired. The veil is an authentic veil from the 1920s. They were both very delicate and beautiful, every girl’s fantasy. It just seemed appropriate. Plus we’ve both been a bit obsessed with veils since that Meadham Kirchhoff collection.

I’ll say. Oh Land is just SUCH a dancer, she’s insufferably graceful. I’m sure that played a part in your wardrobe choices for her.

Yes, this is a theme I’ve noticed on all projects we have worked together on. She likes to be able to move around her legs; a lot of outfits we choose show the legs for that reason (plus the lady’s got killer legs). She has tons of energy when she performs, so I look for pieces that are nonrestricting and pieces that look good when they move as well.

We’re big fans of fringe for that reason. The most exciting part of working with Nanna is her point of view on fashion. She doesn’t care what other people think, or try to conform to what people want her to be. She has fun and is totally confident and courageous with the way she dresses, which inspires me and makes her a bit of a muse for me.

LET’S GET PHYSICAL

Totally. And that leotard + leggings combo with the…what are those, eyelashes on her knees? It’s very Olivia Newton John “Physical”. Talk us through the aesthetic.

The green bodysuit is Eres. The yellow leggings do in fact have eyelashes on the knees. Originally, they went with a big plastic neck piece that was made to look like eyelashes, and a top that had big eyes screen-printed on it. We loved those too, but didn’t get to use them because it sort of restricted movement.

They were made by Laura Mackness, from her senior collection at Central Saint Martins. Both Nanna and I are big supporters of young emerging designers (they tend to be the most imaginative!).

There seems to be a mashup of fashion references, eras, pop culture references. Was it a challenge to alternate looks that frequently?

We didn’t really think about other fashion or pop culture references when we did this. Dressing Oh Land feels a lot more like a couple girls playing dress up. She has a very adventurous and humorous sense of style that makes working together such a treat. The whole shoot and wardrobe were planned well in advance; that made alternating looks pretty easy…besides the garments I had to fit and stitch on set. I think we shot five days.

THIS? A UNICORN HORN. NBD.

Whose idea was the unicorn horn, and how was the prop built? What is the floor-length GORGEOUS rose floral dress she is wearing on top of the horse? The way the hem trails…

I approached Nanna with the idea of doing a unicorn horn. She was really into it, as she tends to love animals and creature-esque things. We had a prop builder make us one but we weren’t going to use it originally (they made it on a goofy-looking bike helmet). So the producer and I cut the horn off the helmet on set, and I rigged it with some fishing line and a white belt I had just long enough to shoot it. The long floral dress is Betsey Johnson.

Who made the two-tone (black and yellow) booties, peach peplum skirt/dress, and the two-tone tights?

The booties were M Missoni. The yellow and orange dress is another Central Saint Martins graduate, LF Markey. The two-tone tights are Look From London. They do the best tights!

Good to know. Speaking of fringe and movement, who created the rust-colored/earth-toned bodice/tassels? It’s sublime.

The fringe dress is Matthew Williamson.

Who made all of the animal-print unitards, and what are they made of?

All the dancers outfits were made by Barcelona designer Roberto Piqueras. Most likely they were Lycra. He was super young and so nice. He gave Nanna and I dresses that had screen-printed naked Barbie and Ken bodies on them.

HEADDRESS UP

Barbie and Ken??? *HEAD EXPLODES* That sounds marvelous. Finally, who made the white headdress, and where on earth can we get one for ourselves?

That is a piece Nanna actually owns, a real gem. I think her manager said Nanna found it somewhere while she was on tour. Her wardrobe sort of blows my mind, she owns some really amazing things. Sometimes I even have to ask her who makes the things she owns (a lot of times it’s underground designers [the white dress she wears is by Michael Angel). It’s embarrassing…
