The dresses rocked all over the 2011 Teen Choice Awards red carpet were beautiful for sure, but there were few standout style trends for the entire event. The HAIR, however, was surprisingly consistent—an overwhelming majority of the young starlets wore their loose, tousled waves in pinned-back, half-up half-down styles. Demi Lovato wore a subtle but still mega-glamazonian version of the trend with her hair in long, voluptuous big-barrel curls. Emma Stone employed a polished interpretation with clean side-swept bangs and slight shoulder-length waves, while Rachel Bilson’s take on the ’do is more organic with ombre tips, natural waves, and a middle part.
This style has all the length and femininity of wearing your hair down with all of the poise and grace of an updo—think of it as a pretty girl-mullet! Except not creepy. Or followed by a disgusto growing-out stage. Or a heinously punishable beauty crime. OK, so it’s nothing like a mullet, but you get the up-down idea, which was so eagerly done in middle school but so expertly done when pinned low to the crown and paired with tousled locks. The best part about the trend is that it flatters all hair types—it’s totally easy to pull off, and looks best with voluminous waves. WIN!
