Those of you who are die-hard fans of Demi Lovato already know this, but our girl D and bestest buddy Selena Gomez got their showbiz start together on a little television program called Barney and Friends. A lot has changed since those formative years they spent chilling with the purple dinosaur (while I sat on Fisher-Price furniture in my living room and watched with a PB+J in hand), namely that these girls are now gigantic megastars, each in her own right. And I use the word “girls” tentatively because both of these lovely ladies are totally effing with my perception of age, specifically my understanding of what a teenager looks like.

I don’t know about you guys, but when I was their age (please excuse me for a second while I LOSE MY BREAKFAST from the shock of typing that), I was definitely NOT anywhere close to the grown woman swag needed to rock a brick red pout and platform Louboutin peeptoes. Elle Magazine is a preeeetty sophisticated glossy, and now both Demi and Selena have graced its pages for way mature (and I mean actually mature, not a euphemism for nudie pics) shoots.

Even in a black and white profile shot shrouded in a vaguely black satin vestment with wind-tousled hair and big cat-eye sunglasses, Demi exudes the confidence of a woman many years her senior. And she doesn’t have to wear gobs of jewelry or tailor-fit couture to achieve that. In fact, she’d probably look a little too Toddlers & Tiaras with that kind of styling. Instead, she comes off gritty and raw and candid, and is starting to strike us as a little like a mini Stevie Nicks for the…whatever we’re calling this decade. Point of the story is: We’re totally in love and can’t wait to see even more of this gorgeously mature Demi. As ex-Disney prez Rich Ross tells Elle, “When you meet her, you know this isn’t a girl in stiletto heels—this is a woman.” Fact.
