Let’s Discuss: Chanel And Carine Roitfeld Get Catty For The 2011 Fall Campaign

No other animal is as fashion-friendly as the feline, and this is a fact that cannot be refuted (heck, I wear my cat ALL the time.) Kitties are affected little weirdos with slender legs and flirty tails, and they are just so thrilled about Chanel. To be certain, I as well am literally trembling with excitement to see this campaign. It is leaves a sweet warm little Chanel-flavored taste in my mouth, and it isn’t just because of the incredible and inspired choice to turn the Chanel roses into cat ears, but it is because of this: Imagine Carine Roitfeld, the ex-editor in chief of French Vogue who deftly birthed this cat-filled campaign from her mind space, saying to her assistants, “Oui oui. But, zee, I vant le chat!” and the entire room scurrying around trying to figure out how to get the perfect whiskers for a Chanel campaign (not too short, and not any of those CHEEKY whiskers because, HULLO THIS IS CHANEL). And then see them calling up some off-season costume store and explaining, hurriedly, that you need THE BEST whiskers and non-smudge nose makeup because you are making Freja Beha Erichsen into a snuggly little feline.

Oh, wait, Freja, is that you? I didn’t even see you there, I was so caught up with your quilted gloves. As much as I care not for models and model-y type things like who walked for who and what type of cigarettes they smoke, I am a proper fan of Erichsen. There’s something a little Klute-era Jane Fonda about her where you are fairly certain she has better manners than you do but she still might cut you. Which is why envisioning her as a cat is takes the feline fetish thing and kicks it up a notch.

Secondly, and not to look a rather impressive gift horse in its mouth, but that mugger/ski mask is really making the photo. All of these sleek lines gracefully glide around, and there is the quilted texture and Freja’s ultra femme low-heeled shoes for trotting about but then BAM, you hit this smorgasbord of folded chunky knit and a little dot of a nose. It is like, excuse us, Roitfeld is just messing with us and we are eating it up like Fancy Feast after a hard day. And Freja is hanging out in a photo booth and also making the EXACT face my tiny little angelball makes when I catch her nibbling on flowers, which is both surprise but then a hint of irritation, like this was her private time in the photo booth and we should leave her alone so she can knead some muffins.

(Note the below, where Freja ditches the cat sophisticate thing—because cats are actually well-behaved, hands-folded princesses. And Roitfeld puts her in a ratty wig and writes a bit about fashion going down the street on her face… something a cat simply would not let you get away with.)
