Cover Girl Of The Day: Mia Wasikowska On ‘Harper’s Bazaar Australia’

Generally, magazines do this thing each time they encounter a girl with “quirk” or “pep” where they decide to style them in “vintage.” Michelle Williams, early Natalie Portman, and Zooey Deschanel have all been victim to the spunky gal/retro shoot, but Mia Wasikowska’s most recent shoot in Harper’s Bazaar Australia took the time-traveling thing über-seriously. Not only did stylist Jillian Davison put the Aussie actress in plenty of high-necked lace and a couple of corsets, but her black Nerida Winter bonnet has us feeling oddly War Of The Roses (and not in the sexy, The Tudors bodice-ripping sort of way). Granted, Mia is promoting her role in the upcoming Jane Eyre, but a Louis Vuitton batiste turnover collar doth not an It Girl make.

But then again, what is happening here suggests Mia’s beauty is literally out of this world (time?). It’s a trait that most glossies pick up on, as she’s always pictured in whimsical poses, splayed on floors and clothed in gauzy white, looking dreamily into the distance about something involving fairies or Lord Tennyson. See? She is thinking, hands poised, on the beach, skirt swirling with lace and embroidery. Sure, the hint of skin peeking out from the Pucci is a little cheeky, but the black is oddly funereal.

Ah, yes. We see what’s going on here. A little term we like to call Cate Blanchett-fying. The blonde in question (with her alt haircut and exquisite cheekbones) is so tall and stern and womanly. This is not a creature that will be quickly forgotten, but will be whisked away to the Undying Lands wearing nothing but a Rodarte appliqué dress (and a travel coat).

Here is a Mia we love, freshly crawled ashore in a knit dress. This shot doesn’t scream quirk or maturity or Catherine Of Aragon, but instead demonstrates what a fresh-faced gal Mia is. Also, the leg-warmer boot thing is so tricky, and done with odd finesse.

So this, this is precisely what we mean by whimsifying the quirky girl. The Rodarte dress is gorgeous. The beach is gorgeous. Mia is literally breathtaking. But the umbrella and the frolicking? We really went there? Couldn’t she just be blessing us with lembas bread or something, instead?

Aaaaannd this is Mia in a bonnet.

Then, of course, Harper’s provides this last glimpse that is so clearly the best photo in the bunch. She is neither a fairy nor a Victorian queen, but is instead clothed in some very modern Japanese designers and wearing a pair of butt-kicking black boots. Sure there is some gauzy cape-thing involved, but it adds movement and is rather lovely. And while she does look classic and timeless, she also resembles, you know, a youth (which she is). Mia, next time we go to the beach, you are totally invited, and we’ll eat watermelon and sun ourselves and you won’t have to wear black once.
