During winter’s chilly months, it’s outerwear that speaks volumes about one’s style. Which is why we’re coveting one of this seasons must-have staples—capes! Not the superhero-style (though those are cool, too); these cozy coats offer a fun departure from ho-hum peacoats and trenches. We decided to hit up some of our favorite style blogs for tips on looking great in a cape (as you can imagine, it’s easy to get the proportions wrong). Shareen Sarwar of Vintage Mavens, Emily Yakashiro of Glittering Bones and Lauren Ashley of Everyday To Runway all rock very different capes, but they look oh-so-adorable doing it!

Based in Miami, Shareen Sarwar chronicles her style and then sells it via her online shop, Vintage Mavens. So, if you find yourself on a frantic mission for a faux fur cape (and why not? faux fur is one of winter’s favorite fabrics) she’s wearing and selling it. Bonus for buying: A portion of the proceeds will benefit Nature World Wildlife Rescue. And, if you’re really inspired by her look, Shareen is also selling her green drop-waist dress which pairs perfectly with her American Apparel tights and Jeffrey Campbell wedges.
Emily Yakashiro of Glittering Bones
Canadian blogger Emily Yakashiro’s wool fringe cape looks all kinds of cozy, which is part of what we love most about this trend. A gift from her grandmother (gotta love a practical gram), this topper is super versatile AND reversible. We love how adding a cape takes Emily’s regular gray tee and skinny jeans ensemble to a whole new level of style.

If you find yourself torn between a pea coat or a cape, check out New York City gal Lauren Ashley’s trendy take. Her wool blend from French Connection looks like a more traditional coat while still staying true to the cape trend. The hunter green color is a must-have hue for winter, and her shimmery scarf and clutch make the cape party-ready. Who needs a coat check when you’re topper is this cute?
