The last time we rocked a high bun was during a third grade ballet recital--and it had a BAD feathery scrunchie wrapped around it. Since then, we've had absolutely no desire to plop our strands on the top of our heads (at least not in public). That was until we saw Kelli Garner at the Los Angeles Going the Distance premiere last week. So cute! Whitney Port and Lea Michele also wore these gorgeous grown-up versions of the top knot back in May, so this is definitely a popular style. Inspired, we pulled out our bag of bobby pins — the same ones from third grade! — and got to twirling. Read on for the tips we got from Thom Priano, a celebrity stylist at the Garren Salon in New York, who has worked with Kate Moss and Natalie Portman, for getting the style right.

On clean, damp hair lightly spritz with a styling spray like Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray ($4.99, Turn your head upside down and blow-dry using your fingers or a wide bristle brush to separate strands.

Once all hair is dry, tip your head over to the front again — this is the easiest way to gather all of your hair on the top of your head into a ponytail — and secure hair into place with a coated elastic band.

Finally, take the ponytail and back-comb the hair with a brush to boost volume. Wrap the ponytail around the base into a bun, covering the holder and securing with big hair pins like Sta-Rite Jumbo Hair Pins ($1.99, Then, use a super-light hair spray — stylists LOVE: L'Oreal Paris Elnett Hairspray ($13.99, — for all day, touchable hold.

What an easy way to get nice buns!
