For her VMA Pre-Show performance, Nicki Minaj wore a purple spandex jumpsuit and black boots and later changed into Champagne-hued trousers and vest to present on stage with Katy Perry. We caught up with Nicki Minaj’s stylist, Niki Schwan, to find out the sweat, love, and last-minute changes that went into these looks. Read on for all the details!

Nicki Minaj’s Performance: Outfit by Marco Marco, Boots by Chanel, repurposed by Niki Schwan.
Stylist Niki Schwan: “We worked with designer Marco Marco directly to make sure the outfit went with the superhero theme and the song. We wanted it to be space-y because they had the space-age accessories on the set, so it was a mix of superhero and Lara Croft and space-y. The boots were a funny story. She had a pair of Chanel boots that she didn’t want to wear anymore, so we reworked them — we added pink leather trim at the thigh, added leather pink and purple to the wedge, and spray painted them. It was heart-wrenching to spray paint Chanel and it was crazy to do that, but it was a way to rework a pair of Chanel boots and customize them for Nicki Minaj, so that was special. We changed the performance costume four times this week, and we had four different outfits and we were up all night until 9 a.m. the morning of fixing it.”

Nicki Minaj As Presenter: Vest and trousers by Lura Starr, Versace pumps, Basile & Pape jewelry.
Stylist Niki Schwan: “The outfit is by Lura Starr, a label I design. She wanted to do something classic because everyone thinks she always so over the top. She wanted to do something that was unexpected she wanted to be comfortable and classic and wanted to wear trousers. Together we came up with high-waisted trousers and a top that allowed for cleavage. We used a bib necklace by Basil & Pape jewelry. The bib was so large that we took some of the bottom pieces off and made it into a cuff. And we paired them with Versace pumps, which were one of the best pumps of the season. I think we just wanted to show the body, and we wanted to do that not with a stretchy fabric, which is why we chose silk. We wanted it to be classy, but still sexy.”

Niki Schwan on why Nicki Minaj chose pink hair: “It’s really simple—she’s promoting her album “Pink Friday” and her whole energy is in a very pink space. You’re going to see a lot of pink with her over the next few months. Her hair changes with her moods. She likes to cater to what her moods are. The beehive was something that her hairstylist created. He was inspired by the space and superhero theme and came up with that on his own.”

Also worth noting: Nicki Minaj might make an appearance at New York Fashion Week!
Niki Schwan: “Marchesa said they wanted to work with us and it’s really a great place to be in that Marchesa wants to see us. It’s a big deal for Nicki Minaj. She’s never experienced Fashion Week and we’re trying to make it, and sit front row at the Marchesa show. She’s starting to be a fashion icon, which is a really great place to be. It’s nice that fashion houses are starting to pay attention, especially fashion houses that are so relevant to the industry.
