Future Inspired Title Of Drake's 'Started From The Bottom'

By Maurice Bobb

Future didn’t produce Drake’s “Started From The Bottom,” the lead single from Nothing Was the Same—that nod goes to Mike Zombie—but the Atlanta-bred multi-hyphenate may deserve a lot of the credit for the chart-topping banger since he provided the phrase, “Start it from the bottom,” that got it all…started.

“Drake came by the studio and I always tell my engineer, ‘Start it from the bottom,’ Future said in a recent interview with Power 106's L.A. Leakers while promoting his new single, “Honest.” “So when I said ‘Start it from the bottom,’ he thought I was talking about the song ‘Chosen One.’”

The OVO frontman revealed to Future later that his command to his engineer was the inspiration for his song.

“He telling me this story,” Future added. “He bought me a bottle of Louis XIII that I never opened up because of this story and I was like ‘Man I don’t want a bottle, I need publishing.’ But Drake, that’s the homie and he was like ‘Um, man, start it from the bottom, it stayed on my mind.’ I instantly got in with the driver and told him to put the CD in, I already had the beat and I just started saying ‘started from the bottom now we here.’

I was like man, why you didn’t tell me in the studio? That’s the first time I ever told somebody that story in the public. I’m not doing it for the publicity, just being honest.”

Future told the station’s DJs that he wished he had been featured on the song, but did say that he and Drizzy were working in the studio together on new material that may land on either his new project, Honest, or the “Hold On, We’re Going Home” rapper’s NWTS.

“We working now,” he added. “You never know what to expect. I know we on the tour together so one thing at a time.”

For now, though, the hitmaker is just happy with the response he’s been getting from his new song.

“The feedback just been incredible,” Future said. “This my first song off my album. I just felt great about the record when I did it. I did it a few months back and I always knew it was special. Like I usually just leak records right after I do it but it’s the timing of me dropping an album and knowing how to strategically put certain things out, man, I had to wait. So we waiting until last night to build up the anticipation of my album.”
