On last night’s episode of "American Idol," ten male contestants sang for their lives to make it into the finals. While five hopefuls made it through to the next round, only one survivor managed to secure a spot in Nicki Minaj’s heart. Quirky 17-year-old, Charlie Askew, impressed the starlet judge from the beginning.
At his first audition in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Askew was sent off to Hollywood with a unanimous vote from the judging panel, capped off with “a thousand percent yes” from Minaj. Then, after his solo performance of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” during Hollywood week, Nicki confessed, “Charlie, I am obsessed with you.” His response was, “Baby, I could say the same thing.” Nicki swooned.
Askew continued to dazzle last night with his rendition of Elton John’s “Rocketman,” which Minaj (who gave him a standing ovation) said was “the most interesting song choice of the night.” She continued to praise him by saying, “Your weirdness, your awkwardness—it excites me.”
The long-haired, turtle necklace-wearing contestant, who has deemed himself “socially awkward,” is, in many ways, the antithesis of a typical heart-throbbing pop star. But his personality and unique performance quality is endearing nonetheless. Nicki agrees that, “it’s rock star, it’s fresh, it’s crazy, it’s like outlandish and genuine.” And the more the “Starships” rapper/singer went on, the crazier her comments became. “Charlie, I want to cradle you in my arms,” she said, adding that she also loves him because he reminds her of her little brother.
Queen Barbz’s final words were: “I love you so much, I love you, please—I love you so—Barbz loves Charlie.” She spoke those last three words so definitively she had to break out in a little laugh. We too are slightly overwhelmed by your (crazy) enthusiasm, Nicki!
