Rihanna celebrates her 25th birthday today and instead of festering over some mundane quarter life crisis, she’s basking in the success of both her personal and professional life. Considering the year she’s had, it’s no wonder Rih is in such high spirits. Here are a few highlights from her past year.
MTV VMAs kickoff performance
Rihanna opened the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards with an explosive performance melding pop, rap and dance. She performed “Cockiness” from her Talk That Talk album featuring a verse from A$AP Rocky and a breakdown to her international hit “We Found Love” with help from Scottish DJ Calvin Harris.
#1 Debut with Unapologetic
Rihanna finally accomplished a numerical feat on the music charts that every artist dreams of. Her seventh studio album, Unapologetic, proved to be lucky number seven for the Bajan songstress, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200.
Reconciliation With Chris Brown
After months of alluding to a reconnection, Rihanna began blatantly instagramming pics of herself with Chris Brown, announcing to the world that, after three years after the pre-Grammys assault, they are back together. In an interview with Rolling Stone she said, "I wasn't going to let anybody's opinion get in the way of that. Even if it's a mistake, it's my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I'd rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it."
Grammys 2013 Performance
Rih performed her ballad “Stay” featuring singer-songwriter Mikky Ekko at the 2013 Grammys, showing critics her vocal and emotional span beyond raunchy hits like “Birthday Cake." The raw and heartfelt melody was met rave reviews.
River Island Collection Debut
The singer turned designer stole the show at London Fashion Week with the debut of her own collection to be sold through British retailer River Island. The collection features angsty and mid-driff baring pieces that pay homage to grunge and punk rock.
Mac Cosmetics Deal
On her birthday, the 25-year-old unveiled her new makeup line for MAC Cosmetics featuring lip colors, blushes and powders to make you look (almost) as radiant as the artist herself. The first product launched will be RiRi Woo a deep ruby lipstick that is similar to MAC’s already best selling Ruby Woo color.
At 25, Rihanna has already come into her own as an artist, catapulting herself into the realm of savvy mini-mogul. Happy Birthday Rih!
