Beyonce’s Star-Spangled Lip-Synch: Is It Really So Scandalous?

By Henna Kathiya

Beyonce delivered an emotional rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at yesterday’s Presidential Inauguration, but now it's being reported that the Grammy Award-winner lip-synced the performance. Does that alter the experience for fans who enjoyed it at the time?

Millions of viewers were stunned at Bey’s flawless rendition of the national anthem but it was soon revealed that she decided shortly before her performance to rely on the studio version rather than risk singing it live on the steps of the U.S. capitol. According to The New York Times the Marine Band confirmed that the song was pre-recorded.

This is not the first time this has happened either. Whitney Houston’s rendition of the national anthem (regarded as the greatest we’ve ever heard from her) in 1991 was also lip-synched. Even at President Obama’s 2009 inauguration ceremony, world–renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma had to fake his performance due to frigid temperatures.

Given the cold temperatures and jumbo-tron that was on the fritz, can we blame Beyonce for making the decision that she made? Regardless of it being lip-synched or not the world can probably agree that it did sound beautiful and it’s common knowledge that Bey does have a set of pipes.

Did this take away from the integrity of the performance or not? Hit the poll.
