Nicki Minaj’s Road To ‘American Idol’

By Henna Kathiya

Last night the long awaited season 12 premiere of “American Idol” aired last night, finally giving fans a chance to see Nicki Minaj in action as a judge. From speculation rumors to drama with Mariah, Nicki has come a long way with the “Idol” crew. To honor the two-night season premiere of “Idol”, RapFix is taking a look back to Nicki’s journey to becoming a judge.

July 2012: Rumors surfaced that Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Nicki Minaj were some of the names linked to possible judges for season 12 of “American Idol.” A spokesperson for "Idol" did not return requests for comment on the report at press time, but an "Idol" insider told the site, "no one has signed any contracts yet and producers are currently putting out feelers and setting up meetings to see who they can get ...

August 2012: Us Weekly confirms the rumors are true, Nicki Minaj was “100 percent confirmed” to join the panel of judges, including Mariah Carey who was signed on in July. A second source added “"A few more slight things to sign off on, but it is happening."

September 2012: Nicki is officially confirmed to be on the next season of Idol. It wasn’t long after taping began that rumors began to surface about Nicki and Mariah being at odds during auditions. A source said “"These girls just don't like each other." It was also reported by TMZ that when producers called Mariah to tell her that Nicki would be joining the cast, she hung up the phone. Both ladies denied the rumors at first. "How are we gonna feud in two days? A feud takes a little longer to spread out [than that]," Mariah responded when MTV News went over to the “Idol” set.

October 2012: The rumors turned out to be true when a video captured by TMZ surfaced of the two arguing with each other during auditions. One of the few lines captured on tape was Nicki firing at Mariah,"I told them, I'm not f---ing putting up with her f---ing highness over there.” Soon after the video leaked their argument became even more public, with threats being thrown around and heated Twitter exchanges between the two proving that their discontent for each other was more than producers just creating drama.

The escalating drama between the two ladies prompts comments from other celebs, from the likes of Stevie Nicks to President Obama.

November 2012: Nicki Minaj’s E! special “My Truth” debuts and Barbz addressed the Mariah beef saying, "I think that Mariah has met her match this time and I don't think she was expecting to meet her match.” The YMCMB rapper also opened up about the long hours and routine of having to always be on time for “Idol” shoots.

Beef with Mariah wasn’t the only thing Nicki had to worry about. Ex “Idol” judge Steven Tyler comes out with racist comments towards Nicki being a judge on panel. Tyler had some less than flattering words about the new judges, when he told MTV News that if a musician like Bob Dylan appeared to audition on the show's current season, Nicki Minaj probably "would have sent him to the cornfield." Nicki took to Twitter to vent. Shortly after the Aerosmith front man apologized for this comments to Nicki.

December 2012/January 2013: While rumors cooled about the Mariah vs. Nicki beef the two ladies try to brush off the rumors, remaining tight-lipped during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter but subtle hints show that they aren’t exactly best friends. However once Mariah Carey sat down with Barbara Walters on “Nightline” she opened up about feeling unsafe around set with Nicki around.

Amidst all the Mariah drama, Barbz was still facing controversy over her credibility as a judge. In response she opened up during a TV press tour to say that she does not want rappers to audition for “Idol.”

After last night’s premiere we can be assured that this season is going to be far from boring with Barbz on panel. Tune in tonight to catch the second part of the two-night season premiere on Fox.
