When Drake popularized the acronym "YOLO" (You Only Live Once) in his hit "The Motto," he had no idea that the term would make it to the shelves of corporate America. Over the holidays, the rapper tweeted photos of "YOLO" merchandise from Walgreen's drug store as well as retailer Macy's and demanded to be compensated.
"Walgreens....you gotta either chill or cut the cheque," Drizzy captioned a photo of YOLO fitted hats (two for $12) and then wrote "Macy's...same goes for you" to a photo of a t-shirt with comic character Charlie Brown and Snoopy.
The term spread like wildfire following the release of "The Motto." The Boston Globe dubbed it a "meteoric rise" and shares that the saying, "You only live once" can be traced to the late 19th century. Even veteran anchorwoman Katie Couric jumped on the bandwagon with her "What's Your YOLO?" contest.
