If you were to tell most Das Racist fans that the eccentric hip-hop trio from Brooklyn were no more they would likely reply with a resounding "Shut Up, Dude." However, it seems like the the gents of Das Racist knew the break-up was a long time coming.
The news finally broke when rapper Heems (Himanshu Suri) took the stage solo in Germany, and publicly announced the group’s split to a festival crowd. "Alright," the rapper said, according to Vulture via HipHopDx. "So I'm gonna do some Das Racist songs, but Das Racist is breaking up and we're not a band anymore."
Das Racists’ other members, Kool A.D. (Victor Vazquez) and hypeman Dapwell (Ashok Kondabolu), were quick to confirm the split once the news leaked. Kool A.D. took to Twitter on December 2, writing, “for the record i quit das racist 2 months ago and was asked by our manager not to announce it yet. apparently @HIMANSHU wanted to do it tho.”
Dapwell told Spin that the trio had big plans before the breakup that all got squashed, saying, “We had a plan to break up around May. We had just signed this record deal and we were going to put out one proper album and then go on a farewell tour, release a proper breaking up statement that could have been really funny, maybe a weird, stupid video. Now, all of that has gone to s---.”
