In just a few short months Kendrick Lamar has gone from underground rap hero to hip-hop’s golden child. That’s right K-Dot’s critically acclaimed debut good kid, m.A.A.d city is now a certified gold LP.“label hit me and told me #GKMC already certified gold,” TDE CEO Top Dawg wrote on Twitter on Friday. “Thanks 2 y’all ....#TDE #HiiiPoWer.”

The gold certification doesn’t mean that the LP has hit the 500,000 copy threshold just yet, but rather that enough copies of the album has been shipped to retail outlets. good kid doesn’t show up in the RIAA’s gold and platinum searchable database either, but the pending plaque is an inevitability.

Kendrick's debut landed at #2 on the Billboard 200 selling over 240,000 units the week after his October 22 release date. Aside from being a commercial success GKMC was praised by fans as critics alike as one of the most creative albums of the year and is a strong contender for hip-hop album of the year.

Before releasing his album through Top Dawg Entertainment on Dr. Dre’s Aftermath label, Lamar had a vote of confidence that most rookie rappers don’t get. “He said, ‘You know what you’re ready. Ain’t no need to develop you or being over your shoulders. You’re already ready’,” Kendrick told MTV News in October of a conversation that he and Dre had a week after he signed.
