Angel Haze Is Painfully Honest On Classick Mixtape

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Newcomer Angel Haze is causing a stir in hip-hop. Her new six-song mixtape, Classick, features the Detroit native rapping over Eminem’s haunting “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.” Angel raps about the sexual abuse she says she suffered for several years starting when she was just a kid, which mentally and emotionally scarred her for years to come. She also addresses her bisexuality and how she thinks that was linked to the abuse.

The song quickly generated accolades from critics and fans for its tart honesty in addressing a subject matter usually taboo in hip-hop. Entertainment Weekly dubbed it, “one of the most bracing, intense, personal, and hard-hitting rap songs you’ll hear all year,” while Spin said, “she’s made some incredible strides to become the insightful, confident, and razor-sharp MC that she’s proved herself to be.”
