UK Video Of The Week: Trim & James Blake (Trimbal) – 'Confidence Boost'

By Joseph 'JP' Patterson

Artist Name: Trim

Location: London, UK

Muscial Style: Avant-grime.

East London’s Trim entered the music game in the early noughties, making a big name for himself as one of the main members of legendary grime collective, Roll Deep. However, due to a few disagreements in-camp, he decided in 2007 that it was time to go solo, a decision that has most definitely worked in his favour. The avant-grime MC, as I like to call him, is an artist who has been embraced by some of the world’s top producers – Hot Chip, Toddla T and Starkey being just a few of them – and he has gained a strong cult following as a result of his left-field collaborations.

Armed with a poetic flow and, often, extremely dark lyrical content, Trim is hands down one of the most original, forward-thinking spitters to ever come out of the UK’s underground music scene – you only have to listen to his Soul Food mixtape series to realize how far ahead of his time he has always been. Trim's forthcoming album, Product, is also set to add to his legacy of cutting-edge, future music.

This week’s "UK Video Of The Week" comes from Trim and James Blake, in "Confidence Boost." "Working with James was sick," Trim tells RapFix. "He’s very good peoples and he has a way with music." James Blake returns to his beat-making roots with this interesting glitchy number, and Trim’s distorted vocals placed over it just adds to the weirdness of it all. Watch the Rollo Jackson-directed video, absorb the deep bars, and strike a pose!

RapFix’s "UK Video Of The Week" is a weekly column by UK-based music journalist, Joseph 'JP' Patterson, designed to give us a closer look at hip-hop across the pond. Stay tuned.
