Pete Rock And CL Smooth's Mecca And The Soul Brother Turns 20

Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s classic 1992 debut album Mecca and the Soul Brother celebrates its 20th anniversary on June 3, and to commemorate the milestone, the legendary duo plan to issue an official remake of their classic single "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),” with some help from a few new artists.

"I'm bringing C.L. Smooth back out to redo 'Reminisce' with a couple of today's artists," Rock told MTV News during a recent interview, although he declined to name the artists he had in mind.

The Mount Vernon native said he felt it was the only way to properly celebrate what they’d accomplished with the album. “It means a lot to us, we was very young when making that album,” he said. “We fell in love with the music and we wanted people to hear the different hip-hop we could bring. Re-doing “T.R.O.Y.” with him is the right way to do it, bringing today’s artists in.”

"They Reminisce Over You" has already been redone several times — on mixtapes as well as commercially released albums, and while Rock can't control unauthorized mixtape covers, he wants to be involved in any official remakes, as he was on Mary J. Blige's 1993 What's the 411? Remix album. "The Mary J. Blige remix was dope because she involved us and she put CL Smooth on her remix," he said.
