Earl Sweatshirt Reflects On Odd Future's Rise To Fame

By Rob Markman

The Odd Future takeover was difficult to miss in 2011, but Earl Sweatshirt was a safe distance from the mayhem, at the  Coral Reef Academy in Samoa, when the madness peaked. Earl made his return to the scene in 2012, and when OFWGKTA  stopped by "RapFix Live" on Wednesday, he meshed with the group as if he'd never let to begin with. "It's been pretty crazy, watching them do them," Earl said, about watching his crew take over (while holding onto four microphones).

While the group was busy breaking through, performing on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" and winning Video Music Awards, Earl was attending the Coral Reef Academy in Samoa. Though his 2010 free Internet album Earlhelped lay the groundwork for the crew's future success, the OF wunderkind was left on the outside looking in. There was even a "Free Earl" campaign that fans championed in the MC's absence.

"It was difficult processing through all of it 'cause it was a lot goin' on with it," he told "RapFix Live."

Though Earl returned home at the top of February, there was concern that he wouldn't be able to make an appearance on The OF Tape, Vol. 2, the album that the crew just released on Tuesday. He was, however, able to make a last-minute contribution to the album's closer, "Oldie." On the 10-minute posse cut, which features all members of the crew, Earl starts his verse spitting, "Look the contrast is a pair of lips/ Swallowing syrup and setting fire to sheriffs' whips."

In an off-the-cuff music video for the track, Earl is seen goofing off with the rest of the group, just in case there was any concern about how he would fit in. "Feels like home," he said on the set of "RapFix Live," where OFWGKTA laughed uncontrollably for almost an hour.

As far as what's next for Earl Sweatshirt: "I'ma do something hot," he said sarcastically.
