Twitter was abuzz with fan reaction to MTV2's Hottest MCs list tonight. The annual list of rappers was collated by MTV's brain trust of producers, programmers and writers and based upon the following criteria for artists over the past year: Impact, Sales, Lyrics, Style and Intangibles. Tonight the top half of the list was revealed with Rick Ross taking the top spot followed by Drake, Kanye, Nicki Minaj and Lil' Wayne (initially Lil' Wayne landed at #3 but following a majority vote was taken down to #4). The remainder of the list: Jay-Z at #6 followed by Meek Mill, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and rounding out the bottom, Wale.
Fans passionately debated the list. On the topic of Nicki and Wayne swapping places, one tweeted, "Nicki minaj deserved her spot! With every hot bar SHE wrote.” Kanye's spot was also contentious as some felt his work on the groundbreaking Watch The Throne album with Jay-Z and subsequent tour should have landed him higher on the list. "If Yeezy doesn't move up to at least number two, tonight was pointless" said a Ye fan.
When it came to the top spot, the debate rested between Maybach Music Group behemoth Rick Ross and Drizzy Drake. The critics had a hard time deciding as did fans. One shared, "Drake vs Rick Ross ? Hard Choice." Following the announcement of the champ, Rozay himself tweeted (link to: twitter.com/rickyrozay) out words of thanks for his fans "Your Luv Is Felt" while his "I'm On One" cohort DJ Khaled ReTweeted the news (link to: Twitter.com/DJkhaled) "RT: @MTV@2: Breaking News: #1 is @rickyrozay and #2 is @Drake!"
As always, some fans were dissatisfied with the rankings. There was much buzz about J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar in particular, being noticeably absent. One fan lamented, "
I think the Kendrick Lamar should of been on the #HottestMc list" while another said, "
JCole shudve had a spot on the top 10 tho .. #HottestMC". Expect the debates to continue until next year's list.
