Common keeps his lyrical tiff at bay in the most recent round of subliminal shots against Drake. Common and V-103 held a private playback and Q&A session last night in Atlanta with radio personality Ryan Cameron at Vanquish lounge. As part of the evening's revelry, Cameron held up cue cards with words he wanted Common--always the adept freestyler-- to rap about over "The Light." When a certain Canadian rapper's name was called out, a very dapper Common playfully rapped, "You can ask why, people wanting me to keep dissing Canada Dry/I can’t do that," a nod to his Drake name-calling on the "Stay Schemin (Remix)"
“I’m talking too long with this amateur guy/ You ain’t wettin’ nobody n---a, you Canada Dry”, Common lashed out in his original diss. The dagger throwing began back in November when Common dropped the line "Singing all around me man, la la la/You ain’t mutha----ing Frank Sinatra" on the song “Sweet” from his The Dreamer/The Believer album. Common revealed to MTV News correspondent and Shade 45 host Sway Calloway that the song was partly aimed at Drake.
During a December show in Las Vegas, Drake reportedly responded to Common’s verses by saying, "I might sing, but I ain't no bitch. If Common got something to say, say it to my face" and dropped a few lines on Rick Ross' "Stay Schemin" which were pointed at Common. “I just ask that when you see me, you speak up ni--a that’s all/Don’t be ducking like you never wanted nothing."
Drake's producer and best friend Noah "40" Shebib jumped into the imbroglio by calling out Common on Twitter: " @common, I remember being called a bitch in grade 9 cause I had your cd. Good thing I also had 456 by kool g rap on me. Now that's real" and "After one day it'll all make sense" came out I spent months arguing weather or not @common was hip hop. Everyone was saying it was too rnb. I'm not dissing, just facts. I love common. I also love swv and John b.” 40's tweets triggered a response from veteran rapper Q-Tip, who urged 40 to play nice and not disrespect Common.
While it's still unclear what the impetus behind the whole melee is, tongues have been wagging for some time that Drake's cozy friendship with tennis star and Common's ex Serena Williams may have incited the beef. “I really, really love and care for Serena Williams”, Drake gushed about Williams in an interview last year.
