Celebrities took to Twitter to honor the memory of singer Aaliyah today. Aaliyah, who would have been 33 years old, tragically died in a plane crash in The Bahamas following the shooting of her “Rock the Boat” music video in 2001. Sonic colleagues and close friends Missy and Timbaland, who first worked with the songstress on the groundbreaking r&b album One in a Million, tweeted “#HappyBirthdayAaliyah Thank u to all of Aaliyah fans 4 remembering the impact she had on music! So appreciated” and “happy birthday aaliyah babygirl i miss you.”
Rapper Lil Kim shared a similar sentiment, writing, “#HappyBirthdayAaliyah my Angel!!!!! I Love U and Miss U So Much :( !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” The two collaborated musically on Kim’s “I Need You Tonight” from Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s Conspiracy album and also shared music video screen time in Kim’s “Crush On You” and Aaliyah’s “If Your Girl Only Knew.”
One of the biggest Aaliyah fans in recent times, Drake, ReTweeted Timbaland and added “Baby Girl,” Aaliyah’s nickname. The singer has had an immense impact on Drake despite never actually crossing paths. The rapper sampled Aaliyah’s smooth “At Your Best (You Are Love)” for his debut album Thank Me Later on “Unforgettable” featuring Young Jeezy. He also wrote a heartfelt open letter to her in which he shared, “I’ve never lost a parent, a friend, or a lover but I will never forget this day for the rest of my life. I remember getting the news that you had passed and it connected with my heart like a clean shot from Muhammad Ali. I was crushed.”
Drake has even tattooed her visage on his back. The late singer has served as both a muse and a guardian angel of sorts for Drake who tweeted last year, “”RIP Baby Girl…in my ear at every show letting me know the next move I should make. Love you.”
She will be missed by all. R.I.P. Aaliyah.
