On January 12, 2010, a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook the island of Haiti, killing 300, 000 people and leaving another 1.5 million residents homeless and without medicine and food. Wyclef Jean, a native of Haiti, was particularly proactive in his attempts to raise relief funds through his Yele Haiti foundation, even attempting to run for office in the presidential elections that followed. Two years later, coverage of the quake has died down, but the country is still recovering from the destruction and hip-hop stars are still involved in the effort. On the two-year anniversary of the earthquake, several celebrities took to Twitter, encouraging their followers to continue supporting Haiti as the country rebuilds.
The ever-outspoken Kanye West took to Twitter on Christmas Eve, reminding fans that Haiti was still in serious need of relief aid and today other stars shared updates via their social media accounts.
Kanye West: Even though Haiti isn't in the news as much the issues are still there. Little has changed. People are still suffering. Many Haitians fled as refugess to the Dominican Republic in despiration to help there families back in Port Au Prince...this only compounded the suffering. As we count our blessings, let us not forget the on going struggles of the people of Hispaniola.
Wyclef Jean : From the ashes we shall rise... RIP to all the victims of the HaitiEarthquake and victims of natural disasters around the world. Tune in today at 6pm to 106 and Park, I will be reporting on the ground from Haiti on the 2 year anniversary of the quake.
