Is Diggy Simmons a better rapper than Common? The Chicago rap veteran’s 14-year-old daughter seems to think so. On Wednesday night Common appeared on Chelsea Handler’s late-night talk show “Chelsea Lately” and while he went on to plug his new television series “Hell on Wheels” and his upcoming album The Dreamer, The Believer, the “I Used to Love H.E.R.” MC talked about the great rap debate within his own household.
“She’ll hear some of my songs and say, ‘That’s not better than Diggy, Diggy’s better than you,’” Common said of his daughter preference for Run's son while laughing. “I’m like, ‘You really believe that?’”
Common, who is one of rap’s most celebrated lyricists also talked about his basketball battle with Justin Bieber, his love for women of all color and how he hasn’t written down his lyrics on paper since 1995.
“It started because I was in Chicago and I would be hanging out with my friends, drinking and I didn’t have a pen, so I would be like, Yo I just gotta start thinking of the thoughts and remember,” he said.
It has been three years since Common released his last solo LP Universal Mind Control and the anticipation for his upcoming December 20 album The Dreamer, The Believer has been steady building. The album’s first single “Ghetto Dreams” features Nas and it’s current single “Sweet” is a chest-pounding proclamation of the battle-tested MC’s skills on the mic.
