Nicki Minaj stole the spotlight at the 2011 American Music Awards, held in Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on Sunday night (November 20). After opening up the show alongside David Guetta with performances of “Turn Me On” and “Super Bass,” the Young Money rapper went on to take home two awards. She picked up trophies for Best Rap/Hip-Hop artist and Best Rap/Hip-Hop album of the year for Pink Friday. During her emotional acceptance speeches, she even managed to thank both Taylor Swift and Lil Wayne.
In the category for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, Minaj defeated Lil Wayne and Kanye West and during her acceptance speech she gave shout outs to Weezy and also to a very excited Taylor Swift. “There’s so much love in this room, I wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart for this love,” she said to the audience, adding a quick thanks to, “Taylor Swift, wherever you are.” Swift, a self-professed Nicki fan and “Super Bass” enthusiast, could be seen beaming from the audience.
Minaj’s second award of the night was Best Rap/Hip-Hop album of the year, for which she beat out Ye and Jay’s Watch The Throne, and Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV. “This one could actually make me cry, I can’t believe this is happening,” a tearful Nicki said to the audience during her acceptance speech. “I’m gonna have to thank god and I have to thank Lil Wayne because without him I would not be here.” She also expressed gratitude to the rest of her Young Money crew–Slim, Cortez Bryant and Mack Maine, before throwing in a joke about her mom’s plans to put out a gospel album.
Did any one have a better night that Nicki Minaj?
