(Nicki Minaj performs at the 2011 American Music Awards)
On Sunday night's (November 20) broadcast of the American Music Awards, Young Money starlet Nicki Minaj had the honors of kicking off the big show alongside David Guetta, performing the smash hits “Turn Me On” and “Super Bass” for an audience that included a very excited Taylor Swift. Nicki took the stage after an introduction from R&B legend Lionel Richie.
The Pink Friday diva was decked out in an inventive metallic space-aged getup complete with speakers protruding from her celebrated assets. The sound in the arena threatened to drown out the animated rap queen, but she made up for it by bringing her own energy.
Later in the show 50 Cent introduced Chris Brown, who lit up the AMAs stage with his songs “All Back” and “Say It With Me," alongside dancers, decked out in white. Fans and detractors of Minaj and Brown shared their thoughts on each performance immediately afterwards, on Twitter.
“Nick Minaj performance was bomb!!” tweeted user @foreverbrigette while an underwhelmed @XtraErin added, “I didn't like that Nick minaj performance at all.” However, a supportive @_kamburgess said, “Nick Minaj singing live, sounding nice and killing the opening of the AMA's. #TeamMinaj gettem Nicki lol :p” – echoing an overwhelming sentiment.
Folks on Twitter had plenty to say about Breezy as well. “Proud of Chris Brown performance he was so amazing, he slayed my life, he performed All Back & Say it With Me, I bet that shut the haters up," tweeted stoked fan @TayLovesBreezy. Pioneering record exec Andre Harrell tweeted, “Chris brown performance was crazy young micheal jackson.” A critical @simplyirrestibl added, “Chris brown sounds terrible on these awards! Guess it shows he cant sing live! Sorry love him but its true!”
