Mixtape Daily: Birdman, Mack Maine, Trey Songz, Nipsey Hussle, Other Notables

By D.L. Chandler

On Monday this week's mixtape frenzy was in full swing with new tapes from Jim Jones, Fat Joe, ASAP Rocky and Freddie Gibbs among others. On Tuesday the freebies kept flowing, with a brand new set of downloads from Birdman and Mack Maine, Nipsey Hussle, 2 Chainz, Raheem DeVaughn and singer-turned-rapper Trey Songz, who dropped two mixtapes. Take a look at the some of latest releases below.

Birdman and Mack Maine – Billionaire Minds

YMCMB has one of the most successful rosters in the rap game and also one of the most stacked. On Billionaire Minds Birdman drops some aggressive verses alongside fellow New Orleans native Mack Maine with features from label mates Lil Wayne, Drake, Jae Millz and Short Dawg. Rick Ross, Maino and Kendrick Lamar, all join the party as well.

Nipsey Hussle – The Marathon Continues

Los Angeles native, Nipsey Hussle, has been grinding since 2005 and although his major label deal fizzled, it hasn’t dulled the determined MC one bit. The Marathon Continues is his latest project, a follow up to 2010’s The Marathon. Nipsey is much more than gangsta rap tough talk, as he barrels through a range of topics on this compilation. The mixtape is light on features but his fellow West Coast spitter Dom Kennedy pops up on one track.

2 Chainz – T.R.U. REALigion

After getting a name upgrade, 2 Chainz—formerly known as Tity Boi—has revitalized his career with a dizzying array of new tracks and feature appearances in the past few months. His latest mixtape is heavy with trunk-rattling anthems and club bangers that will shake up the south and beyond. For this tape, Chainz managed to snag some strong features from Big Sean, Meek Mill, Kreayshawn and Raekwon among others. Production from Lex Luger and Drumma Boy help to round out the project.

Trey Songz – Anticipation II/#LemmeHoldDat2

Trey Songz is a certified studio rat, dropping the sultry, ballad-heavy Anticipation II and rap-heavy #LemmeHoldDat2 mixtapes on the same day. Fans of the Virginia native now have plenty of material to sift through. While Trey gets all late-night seductive on the former project, the latter hip-hop compilation finds him rhyming with the same confidence he possesses while singing. DJ Drama and Drumma Boy assist with the production side of things, and Lil Wayne drops a timely verse on the project.

Raheem DeVaughn – Freedom Fighter

Capitalizing on his new profile as a man of the people, R&B crooner Raheem DeVaughn uses his recent arrest at the “Occupy D.C.” event to fuel his latest collection of songs. Although known for his lover boy tunes, Radio Raheem cut his teeth early in his career as a socially conscious vocalist. Features include big names such as Bun B, Damian Marley, Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton along with others.
