For young rappers trying to stake a claim in the crowded hip-hop marketplace, the right feature on the right track can be a strategic and explosive career move. On the other hand, too many features can drown out their distinctive sound, and for his sophomore album Ambition Wale was conscious of flooding his project. In his Road to Release mini-series, the DMV rapper told MTV2’s "Sucker Free" that he drastically cut down on the amount of features this time around.
“We kept the features to a minimum because I wanted to give you more of me than I did on the previous projects,” Wale explains. In comparison to his debut Attention: Deficit, which featured eleven guest appearances--from Pharrell to Lady Gaga and Bun B--Wale whittled down the number of guests on Ambition.
The MMG rapper was mindful of selecting features to compliment his style (rooted in D.C.’s go-go culture) and some of his top picks include singers Miguel and Lloyd who appear on the tracks “Lotus Flower Bomb” and “Sabotage” respectively. As to be expected, his Maybach Music cohorts were also on board, with both Meek Mill and Rick Ross appearing on the album’s title track “Ambition.”
On Tuesday (October 25) the most recent single from Ambition was released. Listen to the Diplo-produced, Big Sean-featured track “Slight Work” below.
