The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards have already welcomed a theatrical production from show opener Lady Gaga, thrilling her “little monsters” with her impassioned performance under her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. The next big act to take the stage (Surprising fans with an unannounced performance) was the dynamic duo of Kanye West and Jay-Z with their smash “Otis,” from their collaborative album Watch The Throne. From the comments that continue to ring in on Twitter, fans were more than pleased with the results.
Opening much in the same fashion as their Spike Jonze-directed video, flames beckoned in the rap titans as the Otis Redding-fueled track from Kanye thumped throughout the venue as anticipation began to build. Jay and Kanye were both in relaxed gear but extremely animated in the delivery of their verses.
Jay-Z kept his outfit simple and to the point with the Brooklyn bomber decked out in a plain white T-shirt, dark jeans and some rugged Timberland boots. Kayne toned down the flash and rocked a denim outfit with a United States flag rag hanging out of his back pocket and coinciding with the larger version of the flag being unveiled behind the rappers as they advanced on the stage. Fans couldn’t help to notice the glee from the rappers, either.
“If Bey is pregnant, that explains why Hov was so happy in the Otis video. #heir2theThrone,” tweeted fan @PhillyGG.
User @Bombshell_Mel added, “When Ye & Jay do the Otis scream it makes my heart smile lol.”
An excited @valeriehenriqez gushed, “I literally started shaking during otis my god” and @maladude continued the good tidings adding, “Bout to watch this "OTIS" performance again since i was tweeting & jumping on my bed when they were performing.”
User @ComedianAGWhite cemented the fanfare with a tweet that read, “Seeing Jay-Z and Kanye PERFORM OTIS...got me HYPE. Was I the only one that TURNED their VOLUME all the WAY UP???”
Judging from the fans’ reactions, “Otis” was a smash performance for The Throne.
When the cameras panned into the crowd, an indifferent Birdman and the rest of his Cash Money compatriots looked on. Wiz Khalifa and girlfriend Amber Rose also took in the performance offering little in the way of reaction. Maybach Music Group chief Rick Ross was also seen checking out Yeezy and Hov. The performance was nearly marred by an unnamed individual attempting to rush the stage, who was quickly nabbed by show security.
