Former adult film star turned mainstream entertainer Sasha Grey offered her own unique spin on music when she played DJ and host at Stereo Live Friday night (August 12) in Houston, Texas.
Grey, who single-handedly pushed Vinnie Chase down skid row on HBO’s Entourage and played girlfriend-for-sale Chelsea in Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience, stepped behind the raised DJ platform just after midnight clad in an exquisite black bedazzled off-the-shoulder dress, pumps and the requisite over-sized headphones. The incongruity of her posh attire juxtaposed with the grungy wares of the audience served as more of a spotlight on her 75-minute set than the hanging disco ball.
The 23-year old multi-hyphenate (’performance artist,’ actress, musician and now DJ) didn’t manipulate the wax like The Roots’ Questlove, but she did engineer an Apple computer generated track list that was a jarring mix of techno and indecipherable industrial beats with smatterings of trip-hopped takes on Nicki Minaj (“Super Bass”), Usher (“DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love”) and Cee-Lo Green (“F–k You”).
The music, unlike the experimental sound of her band, aTelecine, was spiky and prodding, seemingly jolting club goers out of their seats to dance epileptically on the sparse dance floor. Before her set, Grey, who was also featured in Eminem’s video “Space Bound,” met with fans, which included signing autographs and allowing patrons to snap photos with their cell phone cameras.
“Every set I spin is different,” Grey told MTV News. “I have a passion for it (deejaying). When I DJ, I play the kind of music that I want to hear. I like to take chances. But I love interacting with my fans through music.”
