President Barack Obama, already a historic figure and extremely accomplished, has hit yet another epic milestone as the commander-in-chief celebrates his 50th birthday today.
Imagine birthday shopping for the President of the United States. For his wife, the regal First Lady Mrs. Michelle Obama, that must be quite a task to shop for the leader of the most powerful country in the world. Perhaps the first lady could pre-order a copy of the President's favorite rapper Jay-Z and Kanye West's upcoming album Watch The Throne album or maybe add Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV to add to his iPod? In the past, the President has confirmed that he has a little of Jay-Z and other rappers on his playlist.
Born in 1961 in the island paradise of Honolulu, Hawaii, Barack Hussein Obama II was born to his father Kenyan Barack Obama Sr. and mother Stanley Ann Durham. Moving to Los Angeles to attend Occidental College in 1979, Mr. Obama’s fortunes changed when he transferred schools to attend Columbia University in New York City. Obama entered Harvard Law School in 1988 and graduated in 1991. Obama was elected as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review which led to a book publishing deal regarding race issues that eventually morphed into his 1995 memoir Dreams Of My Father.
Obama’s senatorial career began in 1996 when was elected to the Illinois Senate. He won reelection in 1998 and again in 2002. It was in 2004, however, that Obama exploded onto the national scene and stood out as a figure to be respected. A keynote speech delivered at the 2004 Democratic National Convention displayed Obama’s effective oratory style and stirred a nation all while upping his visibility within the Democratic Party.
Obama became a U.S. Senator in 2005, becoming the only Senate member of the Congressional Black Caucus. It was during this short phase at the Senatorial level that Mr. Obama decided to run for President in November of 2008. Obama’s historic run was met with fierce opposition as former First Lady Hillary Clinton was a tough rival with Obama eventually securing the Democratic nomination for President. Facing up with fellow U.S. Senator John McCain, Obama vanquished the former military pilot and rose to his now historic post.
Jay-Z told Hot 97's Angie Martinez this week that he's become close friends with the President and the pair have quite a history apparently. Telling Martinez that the President is the "second coolest person in the world" aside from himself, Jay-Z gushed over the Mr. Obama saying of their friendship, "It's humbling, it's weird, but I love it."
Happy Birthday, President Obama!
