Tonight, MTV.com brings to the fans a preview of the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards and so far a few of the names tossed into the hat for the coveted Moonman trophy should be fairly familiar. Chicago rapper and producer Kanye West leads all in the rap pack with seven nominations, including chances to win Best Hip Hop Video, Best Male Video and even two nods for Best Collaboration.
Detroit rhyme slinger Eminem is right behind Yeezy with three nominations, joining Mr. West for the Best Male Video category along with Best Direction and Best Cinematography nods as well. Cuban-American rapper Pitbull and old school rap vets Beastie Boys snag a couple of nominations as well. Considering how much he’s been in the press of late, R&B crooner Chris Brown managed just a pair of nominations himself.
First-timers Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean and controversial Odd Future leader Tyler The Creator make their VMA debuts while divas Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga will duke it out over Best Female Video fame with sultry songstress Beyoncé. However, nobody is having as good a year as pop singer and past Kanye West collaborator Katy Perry. The lovely Ms. Perry leads all nominees with a whopping nine mentions, including a bid for Video Of The Year.
