DJ Jazzy Jeff And Mick Boogie Celebrate Summer Classics

by Paul Cantor

Even though June 21st is the first official day of Summer in North America, for many it isn’t until July 4th weekend when folks say hello to two months of warm weather, backyard barbecues and good times. With that in mind, DJ Mick Boogie paired with DJ Jazzy Jeff for the second installment of their Summertime series of mixtapes. The project, Summertime 2, was released online on Friday (July 1st), just in time for the holiday weekend.

“Obviously, Will [Smith] and I had a big record that has stood the test of time with ‘Summertime,’ Jeff told RapFix, of the 1991 smash he had as a member of DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. “And every year, when the weather gets nice, people always come up to me and ask for that song. So we thought we would do them one better and give them this entire mix that evokes that same feeling.”

According to Boogie, last year’s Summertime: The Mixtape, received hundreds of thousands of downloads. He anticipates the latest volume to be equally well-received.

“Jeff and I always talked about doing a tape together, and we simply love good music,” Boogie said. “When we realized how great a complete Summertime mix would sound, we got to work and made it happen.”

The pairing of DJs couldn’t be a better match, as Boogie’s favorite summer song is actually one of Jeff’s. “It has to be ‘Summertime’,” he said. “[But] if I had to choose outside of the fam, I'd say maybe De La Soul’s ‘Breakadawn’.”

Jeff on the other hand, keeps it more old school. Sly Stone’s “Hot Fun In The Summertime” is his favorite.
