Is Lil Kim the next rapper to ink a deal with the respectable, yet controversial G-Unit Records? The Bed-Stuy Brooklyn born native is rumored to be the next act to join forces with Queens mogul 50 Cent on his fledging imprint. If so, Kim would be following in the footsteps of Atlanta entrepreneur Shawty Lo who recently announced that he was the latest member to sign with the Unit.
This past weekend Kim surprised fans at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta for the 16th annual "Birthday Bash" concert popping up during Shawty Lo's set mid-way through his performance that kicked off with a video introduction from the G-Unit mastermind himself. Kim's appearance sent the arena into a complete zoo-like atmosphere.
"If ya’ll don’t know, this my boy right here" Kim said referring to L-O. "G-Unit South, that’s where it’s at and I’m family too, down with the G-Unit camp. We got surprises for ya’ll.”
Lil Kim's broad comments led many to believe she was on the verge, if not already, joining G-Unit. There's been rumblings in the past of the two rap vets teaming up but the reports have been building over the last few days. Last week during a radio interview with host Funkmaster Flex the disc jockey bombarded Fif with a series of questions, one of those regarding Lil Kim.
"I haven't had the opportunity to record with her" 50 answered Flex when asked what was the status of their business relationship. "We was talking about getting together to do something so we'll probably get together. When she said we was working together we had conversations about going in to do it cause you know, we had "Magic Stick" in the past and we made some things that felt good so I was like 'I'm open to it.' So we'll find some time to get in and go ahead and do something."
While 50's comments may not exactly sound convincing in regards to adding Kim to his roster considering the two have yet to join each other in the studio, 50 has made it clear throughout his career that he's a strategy perfectionist so keeping his lips sealed until a potential deal would be complete wouldn't necessarily be abnormal. Aside from a minor beef years back courtesy of Lil Kim's violent ex-boyfriend (Kim's man at the time attempted to fire at 50 and his crew at a New Jersey hotel), Kim and 50 have been on good terms for the majority of their careers. Months back when 50 tweeted photos of a few studio sessions featuring Busta Rhymes and Ryan Leslie, Fif also showed a photo of himself alongside the Queen Bee.
Kim launched her careers on the back of the late great Notorious B.I.G. making a household name for herself as Hip-Hop's most sought after female MC. Since B.I.G.'s untimely passing Kim has been aligned with other influential rap stars including Diddy and Jay-Z. As one of the last heirs to the Christopher Wallace throne, would a move to G-Unit benefit Kim's career? Only time will tell.
