Kanye West and his larger than life personality was on display last summer when he visited the offices of social media giants Facebook and Twitter to perform tracks off the album that was then titled Good Ass Job – which eventually morphed into his fifth studio release My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. During the visit, in where the outsized rapper rapped loudly atop office tables in a conference room, Yeezy premiered a song “Mama's Boyfriend” to the group that was reported later to appear as a bonus cut on Ye's latest album.
Last night, a high quality leak of the track hit the Internet and the song made its rounds throughout the blogosphere. The track is somewhat reminiscent of his earlier sample-heavy work, and it contrasted with his current and vastly orchestrated sound. The lyrics, centered on his late mother Donde West and her dating choices, capture the frustration of a protective and perhaps jealous son fighting for his parent’s attention. Fans around the ‘Net offered a variety of comments, with most of them being favorable.
Twitter fan @mrHouser tweeted, “[S]ounds more like college dropout than anything on the album” while a delighted @BOSSSPOOK added, “Listening to Kanye West New Song Mama's Boyfriend Man what can I say Homie [is] going in.”
However, one fan felt let down by the much-hyped track. “Kanye West finally dropped "Mama's Boyfriend." And let's just say it wasn't really as good as it was hyped up to be. Disappointed,” commented @raymundrocket.
Yet most comments were glowing, including a tweet from user @TLN24 that read, “Mama's Boyfriend" by Kanye West is FIRE! Sounds like the classic Kanye, with the soulful beats! Love it!”
