Houston spitter Kirkoz Bangz elevated to big boy status yesterday afternoon following the release of his new video "What Yo Name Iz' on RapFix Live.
At just 21 years of age, the creatively named Kirko Bangz has worked his way to hip hop notoriety with his buzzing single currently making a splash on his hometown airwaves and abroad, thus landing the former Prairie View University student a record deal with powerhouse music label Warner Brothers. MTV News caught up with Kirko as the MC explained the origin behind his hit song and how spontaneous creativity spawned the creation of the record with his production team Sound M.O.B.
A skull cap wearing and bespectacled Kirko explained in his syrupy southern drawl the story behind the conception of the single. “Let me tell you the history behind the record. I was like ‘man let’s make this beat, let’s make it a banger and let’s make it slow and knock’,” said Kirko. “He did a little bit and I was like ‘all right let’s stop right there’ and start rapping.” Kirko went on to add, “But before that he had to do this little part, I had never used Auto-Tune before. But when I did it, it was cool.”
Somewhat reluctant at first to use the vocal plug-in program, Kirko eventually decided amid freestyling over the track that using Auto-Tune made sense. “I kept saying ‘shawty what yo name is’ during the breaks of us recording. So I was like ‘man, I’m about to make a song named “Shawty What Yo Name Is” and them n---as was laughing, “said a grinning Kirko.
Originally six minutes long, “What Yo Name Iz” became a club favorite in Houston and was released on Kirko’s first mixtape Procrastination Kills. Kirko then met his current manager D Will while on campus and was convinced by his new ally to cut down the song to three minutes and added a hook. To apply an often used cliché phrase: the rest is history.
Kirko Bangz may have gotten picked on by his friends for playfully creating the track but now he’s laughing all the way to the bank with a DJ Drama hosted mixtape Procrastination Kills 3 available for download now while he is no doubt working on his major label debut for Warner Brothers.
