MTV Jam Of The Week: Lupe Fiasco's 'Words I Never Said'

By Kathy Iandoli

“We got the number one record in the country,” Lupe announces as he opens his single off Lasers “Words I Never Said” live on stage. The Hip-Hop artist performed the Alex Da Kid produced track (featuring Skylar Grey) poolside with a live band for MTV Spring Break 2011 goers. He was introduced by Jersey Shore cast members DJ Pauly D and Deena, who referred to Lupe as “a man who’s definitely got style.”

Everyone backing Lupe was wearing a version of his exact same outfit – a white t-shirt with camouflage. Everyone on stage was truthfully overdressed, compared to the scantily clad college students that surrounded the pool at MTV’s Las Vegas Spring Break venue.

Despite the incredibly ominous tone in the lyrics of the single, the crowd didn’t seem to mind, cheering and waving their hands playfully volleying balloons. Hopefully some of Lupe’s message seeped into their chlorine stained heads.

While Grey wasn’t present for the performance, her voice was felt over the speakers hauntingly cooing the hook to the song. Lupe’s third studio album Lasers was subject to many pushbacks, but thanks to singles like “Words I Never Said”, Lupe’s effort hit the top of the charts its first week of release.

“Young people of the world. Young people all over the world,” Lupe declared to the crowd. “Make sure you stand up for what you believe in. Stand up for what’s right in this life. Don’t let things go by. Don’t waste your time. Make a difference. Love always shines every time.”

Even at a Spring Break party, Lupe Fiasco manages to get his point across.
