Skylar Grey Was Known As Holly Brook Prior To Meeting Eminem

Don’t mistake Skylar Grey for a neophyte act that came out of nowhere.

A few years ago MTV News caught up with Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda who in turn gave some shine to his artist Holly Brook. Shinoda was promoting his Fort Minor hip hop project, The Rising Tied, and on MTV’s behalf interviewed Brook, who is now professionally known as Skylar Grey—who most recently performed alongside Eminem and Dr. Dre at the 53rd Grammy Awards. At the time of the interview, Brook (who is now Grey, try to keep up), was about to release her album Like Blood Like Honey.

In the clip Brook/Grey can be seen performing background vocals and playing keys on Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go” along with Shinoda on stage. Brook/Grey at the time was a new signee to Linkin Park’s Machine Shop Recordings imprint but already had plenty of recording experience.

“I started performing when I was six with my mom,” revealed Brook/Grey, sporting auburn colored hair instead of the dark black tresses she is known for today. “We sang folk songs and kid songs. We had interesting song titles like "We Are the Colors of the Rainbow" and "Grandma Slid Down the Mountain" [laughs].”

“We kept it really organic, we actually recorded a lot of the songs live in the studio,” she said of the album, which was distributed by Warner Brothers. “It gives everything a much warmer sound. Kind of like older records…like my favorites. So I wanted to capture that.”
