Much of the interwebs are a buzz this morning thanks to Lady Gaga's first single, "Born This Way." No offense but the song lacks that certain je ne sais que that we’ve come to expect from Gaga. Thankfully there’s another, lesser known, but equally provocative, artist that is about to start generating a lot of buzz. Tyler, The Creator dropped the video for his first single, "Yonkers," off of his second album Goblin this morning, and it's one of the best videos I've seen in a long time.
The black-and-white video is directed by Tyler (who also wrote and produced the track), and it features the de facto Odd Future leader sitting alone and rhyming while he "eats" a cockroach and vomits it back up just before unbuttoning his shirt and revealing a wealth of gold chains - occasionally pausing, but never missing the pick-up. At the end Tyler hangs himself as the beat runs out. This may not shock too many familiar with LA’s Odd Future (OFWGKTA!), but it’s certain to raise a lot of eye brows. And hopefully it brings the 11-man rap collective a lot of well-deserved attention.
Goblin is the follow-up to Tyler’s overlooked and underrated 2009 album, Bastard. It is set to drop sometime this spring. Before then Odd Future will be performing at a few East Coast shows next week, as well as appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Wednesday evening, before heading back to the West Coast. They are also set to play this year’s Coachella Music Festival.
Be sure to check the video out on Odd Future's site.
