Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa already scored a hit with “Black and Yellow.” Thanks to rappers creating their own versions of the Stargate produced smash record, and professional sports, the song is still growing. Wiz’s version is still king, as it currently sits at #1 on the Billboard Rap and Billboard Ringtone charts and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Thanks to the Pittsburgh Steelers making it to the Super Bowl, “Black and Yellow” has become the team’s default anthem since the song is an ode to the city of Pittsburgh’s black and yellow colors. The song’s only official remix, so far, is the “Black & Yellow (G-Mix)” which features
The list of unauthorized “Black and Yellow” remixes is extensive. From established rappers to neophytes, countless rappers have taken a hand at creating their own version. Chester Hanks raps under the moniker Chat Haze and he also happens to be the son of actor Tom Hanks. Chet dropped a “Purple and White (Northwestern University Remix)” in honor of his current school. Another Pittsburgh rapper named Calico recorded a version of the song with lyrics specifically tailored to the Steelers.
As for better-known acts, New York rapper Fabolous used the same Stargate instrumental for his “White and Navy” (think: New York Yankees) while Miami rapper Jay B flipped “Black and Red” in honor of the Miami Heat. LA rapper the Game titled his recent double mixtape Purp & Patron and it features “Purp & Yellow SKEETOX.” The song is his own version of “Black and Yellow” and keeps Wiz’s vocals on the track but now includes the Game and Snoop Dogg bigging up the Los Angeles Lakers.
The most high profile “Black and Yellow” remix to date is easily Lil Wayne’s version. Just released on Thursday, February 3 and titled “Green and Yellow,” the song finds Weezy pledging his allegiance to the Green Bay Packers in rhyme. The New Orleans rapper even landed on ESPN to discuss his version saying, “It’s not a dis song at all, it’s a fight song. Every team has a great fight song.”
Released in September 2010, “Black and Yellow” is the lead single to Wiz Khalifa’s album Rolling Papers, due in stores in March.
