French Montana looks like he’s ready for rap combat in his new video for “Choppa Choppa Down” featuring Waka Flocka Flame. The Bronx rapper told MTV News that Waka was not originally intended to appear on the bottom heavy, Southern flavored track.
“I recorded ‘Choppa Choppa Down’ when I was in Memphis with Three 6 Mafia. But when I had did it they had never laid their verses down,” says French Montana, who name checks Juicy J and Project Pat in his verse. “We worked on a whole album together. We got a whole album coming out, it’s called Cocaine Mafia. When we was doing that records it was one of the records we ain’t get to finish. So when I got to see Waka he heard it [and] he was like, ‘Man I gotta jump on it’… Everybody that heard it said, ‘Man that record is crazy.’ So we was like, Ya know what, we going to run with it.”
In the clip, which features cameos from Gucci Mane and Shawty Lo, French Montana and Waka Flocka are seen dressed top to bottom in fatigues and war paint while rapping and trying to save the President. An actor that bears a resemblance to Barack Obama is seen bouncing along to the song near its end. “The concept is just different, we wanted to make it look different,” says Montana who also cited a film as inspiration for the video. “Obama get caught up, me and Waka go save him, we in army gear, we hopping out of helicopters, just like Black Hawk Down. That’s all we thought about, Black Hawk Down the movie.”
Late last year, French Montana inked a management deal with Mizay Entertainment. Mizay’s CEO is Waka’s mother Debra Antney, who also manages Gucci Mane. French Montana’s new album Excuse My French is due later this year and he hopes it will include the collaboration he recorded with Lady Gaga in 2010.
“I’m trying to the get that together,” said Montana. “The problems I get is in the collabos getting cleared. The collab be the easiest part. Shout out Lady Gaga. I love Lady Gaga. We met her in the New Year, down in Miami.”
