Fred The Godson Explains The Origin Of His Name

By Alvin Blanco

During a trek up to The Bronx, MTV News connected with Fred the Godson, one 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs. While discussing his new mixtape, Armageddon, the BX spitta also revealed how he came up with the "Godson" moniker.

Turns out Fred, who suffers from asthma, got his name after convincing his doctor that, despite his condition, he was okay to perform at a show.

"I was telling her, I said listen I got a show tonight," recalls Fred. "She was telling me No, you shouldn’t do it. Your levels is bad, you got asthma. I don’t think it’s a good idea. And I was trying to explain to her, Listen I been practicing. And for some reason when I’m practicing, the asthma, it doesn’t really bother [me]."

The concerned MD didn’t believe Fred, so he offered her a chance to see him rocking the mic in person.

"I gave her a flier, I gave her a ticket, I said, 'Alright, come through,' " remembers Fred.

"I ain’t think she was going to come, but she came. I finished out, I rocked out, but of course I ain’t win," he continued. "But as soon as I got off stage she was so proud. She was like, 'Yo, that’s crazy! I can’t believe you went through with it, it’s like, it’s like you’re Godson, it’s like, God was looking over you.' So, I just kept it Fred the Godson.”

What, you didn’t think it was an ode to Nas did you?
